Dries Van Noten Summer 2019
Words by Elizabeth Clarke
Fabulous florals, clean lines, and divine detailing, this season Belgian designer Dries Van Noten puts the bright, cheery, and chic back into everyday basics.
Classic, Chic and Easy-Peasy
Beautifully-cut essentials, reworked classics, and an unexpected mix of high and low make this the go-to collection for modern women who truly enjoy clothes.
A perfect poplin shirt overlayed with a yellow beaded tulle yoke; beautifully draped skirts and dresses festooned with feathers; sleeveless tees with rounded shoulders tucked into buttery-soft cargo pants; sweat shirts teamed with sequin pencil skirts; embellished trench coats; anoraks featuring crystal-fringed epaulets, and deconstructed khaki and navy pant suits beautified with feathers.
This season, the colour palette is bright, breezy and just a little bit 80s.
Canary yellow, jade, cobalt, pink, tangerine, and lilac feature in block mode, as well as on resplendently hand painted silks. White, khaki, navy and monochrome tones add edge and polish, as well as temper the bright bursts of colour, making every piece unique, beautiful and effortless to wear.
Florals are the Jam
“I’m always asked what my favourite flowers and fruit are,” Dries recently told Vogue. “In Spring I am happy about the tiniest little flower, and in early June I’m happy because of the huge peonies in flower. Strawberry jam is fantastic, and so is quince jam in Autumn. If it is in season, I am happy.”
Think spriggy, watercolour, and graphic reverse floral prints, sharpened up with wide diagonal stripes, crisp white, army fatigue green, and arresting colour combinations, that elevate even the simplest of wardrobe essentials.
Blast of Contrast
As in all of his collections, Dries presents a wonderful juxtaposition for summer - from papery-light technical fabrics, beaded tulles, cotton drills, dramatic bows, fringing, and feathery details, to oversized paillettes, glittery embellishments and bungee cords.
All unique, innovative and luxurious, when combined with his contemporary take on couture silhouettes, they make for perfectly relaxed, luxe, and effortless style.
Which is exactly what the modern woman, who adores clothes, wants to wear.
