An insider's guide to down south
Judy Burbury’s guide to best bites down south

Known for its beautiful vineyards and pristine beaches, our south west region’s constellation of villages is rich in culture and much loved restaurants. That said, discovering new-to-us spots to eat is always exciting.

With holidays nearly here, we sat down with our resident douth aficionado, Judy Burbury, for her pick of the ultimate down south must-dos.

Your love affair with down south is a long one Judy…

Judy Burbury (JB):  It is! I love how the beach hits farmland and takes the southwest right to the coast. It's a fabulous lifestyle – lots of eating and walking and enjoying others company. Of course, we have our Adam Heath boutique in Dunsborough – another wonderful reason to visit regularly. I've been going down south since the seventies. It's changed a lot.

How so?

JB: It's become a significant cultural destination globally. It used to be all about the galleries, and now it's moved onto fabulous food as well. There's great entertainment too. Gourmet Escape every November is world-class, concerts at Leeuwin are fantastic, and CinefestOZ, Australia's premier destination film festival, is held in Busselton. Architecturally the region is fantastic. Perth's best interior designers create the most beautiful homes and gardens. And, of course, there are the vineyards. The region's land and weather make it one of the most sought after spots in the country for wine making. Many of our wines are globally recognised and have made their mark on the international stage.

What is your favourite time of year to visit?

JB: I love it all year round. In winter for its gorgeous cosiness and walks, and in summer, the beach is divine. I love spending time with friends and family down there.

Which parts of the region do you especially love?

JB:   Yallingup for its breathtaking environment and views and Eagle Bay because it's comfortable and relaxing. I've been going to both for years.

Where do you like to eat, Judy? Take us through the day…..
