It's that time of the season when we crave a wardrobe reboot. Sure, a pair of shoes make us feel cheerier, but there's something about a beautiful new bag that puts a spring in our step and a whole new twist on our look.

When looking for your mid-season handbag, there's a lot to think about: size, function, colour, shape, day or night?

From the trusty hobo to bags that make us giggle (yes, really), we have handbags to buy, wear and cherish.

Here is Elizabeth Clarke's edit of winter's hottest handbags.

The classic Hobo, a crescent-shaped bag held by straps and usually crafted in leather, is reimagined by Marni in the most delicious shade of caramel. But more than its scrummy shade, it’s the bag that goes with everything – classic, functional, and easily styled. Snatch it up now – wear it forever.

It looks fab with:

Style and a sense of humour - what more could you ask from a handbag? Anya Hindmarch is the queen of quirk, and her cute cross-body bag is our new favourite. Wear with a smile.

Style it with:

Drawing divine design inspiration from vintage camera bags, this starry little number is useful and eye-catching. From its slick, glossy leather and sparkling Swarovski crystal star to a cute sneaker-shaped key ring, it’s sure to be bags of fun all year round.

Go all out wearing it with:

We’re in love with this sweet little envelope bag swathed in perfectly crinkled chocolate glossed leather. Wear over the shoulder, adjust its strap and wear it cross-body, or remove it altogether and wear it as a clutch! Three bags in one - who knew?

It looks just right with:

Small, vibrant and crafted in raffia, Altuzarra's Watermill Crossbody bag might be our new favourite new go-to. It brightens denim, complements a pretty blouse or offsets a fabulous print or pattern. While its cheerful weave screams 'resort wear', its leather detailing says 'take me to lunch'. Either way, you're nailing it day to night and everywhere in between.

Try wearing it with:

As compact as a purse and functional as a wallet, Marni's Trunk bag is fast becoming a style status symbol. We're mad for it in this divine shade of berry, but it's lovely in purple and chocolate too.

Style it up with:

Soft, stylish and compact, Ulla Johnson’s Paloma bag is surprisingly roomy. Release its drawstring for more space and functionality. We love its sweet silhouette and soft tan inner. Wear it cross-body and with everything. It’s your new all-rounder!

Wear yours with:
